Irish device can scan everything in your shopping trolley at once

NEW scanning technology demanded by large supermarkets in the US and Britain is being developed at the Institute of Technology (IT) in Tralee.

Pilot projects are being carried out by the wireless and mobility research group at the IT.

What’s essentially being promoted is an electronic barcode which, according to the IT’s Dr Pat Doody, will eventually become common in business. “A big difference between this device and the usual scanning system is that it does not have to see the tag on a product,” he said. “For instance, it could scan all the items in a shopping trolley at the same time.
