FERMOY in north Cork was yesterday named Ireland’s cleanest town as the country’s larger centres creep closer to their European counterparts as being near litter-free.

The overall winner just edged out Dundalk in the anti-litter league conducted by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL).

The league, the largest litter survey, was carried out in centres of population of more than 6,000.
