AN AUDIT of the accounts of 15,000 private patients who are in long-term care is underway after their bank balances were bumped up under a repayments scheme.

Bank documents are held by the HSE on behalf of patients, including elderly people, those in acute hospitals, those with intellectual difficulties, along with patients suffering mental and physical disabilities.

The full check of the bank accounts will begin this month costing the Health Service Executive (HSE) €253,000.
