Moves to double period for detaining suspects

GARDAÍ will soon have twice the length of time to detain and question suspects.

The maximum detention period is to double from 12 to 24 hours under the changes.

The move will be warmly welcomed by detectives who have repeatedly said 12 hours was too short a time to interview suspects for serious offences.
