TWO of the most high-profile TDs in the Dáil made surprise announcements last night that they will not be contesting next summer’s General Election.

Gay Mitchell of Fine Gael, who won a Dublin seat in the 2004 European elections, said that he would remain as an MEP and relinquish his Dáil seat next year.

And Mildred Fox, the independent deputy for Wicklow, told her local radio station last night that she would be standing down next year, 12 years after being elected to the Dáil.
