The woman had been subjected to an 11-hour ordeal after being jumped on by three masked men outside her home in Beaumont, north Dublin, at 6pm on Tuesday and bundled into the back of a white van.

The victim, named as Mary Noone, was taken to the Monkstown area.

Two of the raiders took her keys to the post office on the North Strand, in the north inner city, and drove off to rob the office.

The post mistress managed to escape just before 5am after she saw her remaining kidnapper apparently inject himself with drugs and doze off.

Ms Noone sought help at the nearby Salthill Apartments complex, where residents contacted gardaí.

Officers from nearby Dun Laoghaire Garda Station arrived within minutes, but the kidnapper in the van had vanished.

Armed garda units, supported by the garda helicopter, descended on the North Strand, and conducted a surveillance operation.

However, it became clear that the raiders had aborted the robbery.

Gardaí appealed for information on the white Offaly registered van, with the registration 98OY 1553, was stolen in October from Glasnevin Industrial Estate.

This was the third “tiger kidnapping” in the Garda Northern Division in Dublin since August.
