Remains of climber identified

THE remains found at the base of Mangerton Mountain, near Killarney, are those of Swedish student Olof Jansson, 22, who had not been seen for almost two years, gardaí confirmed last night.

Remains of climber identified

Gardaí said the remains had been positively identified following examination of dental records.

A post mortem examination was carried out at Kerry General Hospital, Tralee, yesterday, by assistant state pathologist Dr Margot Bolster.

Mr Jansson, from Gothenburg, had been missing since late December 2004 after he had set out from Kilgarvan on a three-day trek over the MacGillicuddy Reeks.

Also, garda investigations into the finding of a body in a wooded area, close to Ross Castle, Killarney, last Monday, are continuing.

A line of inquiry being followed is that the badly decomposed remains may be those of missing Polish man, Dariusz Giera, 42, who has not been since August last.

However, gardaí said they have not yet positively identified the remains.
