Reversing car kills toddler outside home

The 22-month-old boy died when struck by a reversing car outside his home at Charnwood Grove, Clonsilla, Dublin 15.

The dead child was named as Evon Keane. The accident happened at 2.10pm and the injured infant was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Two people also died following a three-car collision which happened on the Dublin road outside Newry. Three others were seriously hurt and a fourth was released from hospital after treatment.

A taxi and a van were both extensively damaged in the crash, which happened shortly before midnight on Saturday. The PSNI have released the names of the two victims of the crash.

They were 26-year-old Gerry Fearon from Dromintee, south Armagh, a passenger in a white Renault Clio van, and 44-year-old taxi driver Stephen Shields.

He came originally from Crossmaglen, south Armagh but lived in Newry, not far from where the accident happened.

The two vehicles had both been travelling out of Newry on the Dublin Road when the crash occurred.

Police said a third vehicle was also involved. It was heading in the opposite direction, towards the city.

According to the police, it collided head-on with the taxi and the van.

There have been a number of fatal accidents on that stretch of road in recent times and the PSNI have appealed for witnesses to the accident.

A number of motorists stopped to give first aid assistance at the scene of the crash.
