THE Government’s proposed privacy legislation conflicts with press freedom in this country and would “inhibit the way newspapers carry out their legitimate and important function in society”.

That is according to the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) and the World Editors Forum (WEF), who represent 18,000 publications in 102 countries worldwide.

They have written to both Taoiseach Bertie Ahern and Justice Minister Michael McDowell to protest against the proposed legislation.
