THE new commander of the Irish army in the south reviewed troops yesterday on his first day in the job.

Brigadier General Patrick Hayes, from Limerick, took over as General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 1st Southern Brigade at Collins Barracks in Cork and on arrival, he reviewed a guard of honour drawn from 4th Infantry Battalion.

He was busy last night preparing for the visit on Thursday of Defence Minister Willie O’Dea to Collins Barracks.
