Heroic shot garda ‘should get a medal’

Garda Sergeant Mark Clarke was shot at close range with a sawn-off shotgun in the first of two shooting incidents in a Dublin suburb early yesterday morning.

The officer, who was uniformed and unarmed, was trying to save the life of an intended target of the shooting, when he was shot at. The mother of the intended victim described the garda, a married man in his early 30s, as a hero.
