Road safety blitz to target Polish community

A MAJOR road safety blitz aimed at Cork’s growing Polish community will be launched this week.

Leaflets warning of the dangers of drink driving, and offering advice on the National Car Test, child safety and seat belts have been prepared in Polish.

They will be distributed to the city’s estimated 25,000-strong Polish community by two voluntary organisations working with immigrants in the city — My Cork and The Cork Networking Committee.

The move follows the deaths earlier this year of four Polish men in an horrific car crash on the outskirts of the city.

Sylwester Szczyrow, 25, Andrzej Wojciechowski, 27, and Rafal Gorski, 28, all with an address at 42, Parknamore Rise, Ballincollig, Co Cork, and Radoslaw Nowak, 23, with an address at 12, Longrange, Powdermills, also in Ballincollig, were killed when the Opel Astra in which they were travelling was in collision with a truck at Goggan’s Hill in Ballinhassig, Co Cork, just after 10pm on Good Friday last April.

The new leaflets will be available in ethnic shops and the two community groups will publish the details on their websites, www.mycork.org and www.corknc.org.
