Support group for crime victims
Support After Crime was founded last January by former garda Sally Hanlon and offers its free services to crime victims across Munster.
So far it has helped 283 victims and aims to encourage others to use its services.
Speaking before last night’s launch at the Imperial Hotel, which was attended by the head of the new Garda inspectorate, Kathy O’Toole, and a cross-section of politicians, director Sally Hanlon said that too often victims of crime felt forgotten.
“If you have been a victim of crime, don’t suffer it alone, come to us and we will offer the support that is needed,” she said.
“We give people acknowledgement, kindness, emotional support and information about what to expect next in terms of their case.
“Being of victim of crime is often extremely upsetting and we are offering a support system to get through that.”
Among those at last night’s event was Gary O’Donovan, who turned to Support After Crime when he, his pregnant wife and children were held hostage in his own home by armed men.
Support After Crime is staffed by two full-time members and 40 volunteers.
It is partly funded by the Department of Justice.
“I hope the official launch will create a broader awareness amongst people that we are here to help,” said Ms Hanlon.
