HSE under fire on anniversary of hospital death

AS the first anniversary approaches of the death of Patrick Joseph Walsh, his family say they are still upset over the circumstances of the pensioner’s death.

HSE under fire on anniversary of hospital death

Speaking to reporters yesterday, they were scathing about the Health Service Executive and Monaghan Hospital.

A family spokesman said: “Our uncle was given no chance of survival that night. His case was not a priority.”

The family were critical of the “difficulties” between consultants at the time and the protocols in place relating to patient care.

They were also critical about what they saw as HSE management failure to sort out properly the issues surrounding the transfer of patients from Monaghan to other hospitals, as well as their care.

The night their uncle died, they said, another patient had been successfully transferred from Monaghan to Cavan for treatment.

The family also criticised the level of public healthcare in Monaghan, saying the county lacked a proper health service.

“All we have is segments (of a health service) looking after small places and there’s no overall, global scheme working for the good of the people,” they said.

The family said they were grateful to the authors of the deeply critical official HSE report into the death.

Ahead of the first anniversary in October, the family said they were still deeply sad about the death.
