A CORKMAN battled the highest spring tides in 30 years to become the first garda to swim the English Channel yesterday.

Danny Coholan, 30, who won a bravery award in 2003 for saving a man from drowning in Limerick, completed the exhausting swim just after 2am.

The distance from Dover to Cap Gris Nez in France is 22 miles.
