Nurses and midwives to boycott unions’ pay deal vote

NURSES and midwives plan to boycott next week’s Irish Congress of Trade Unions vote on the national pay agreement.

Nurses and midwives to boycott unions’ pay deal vote

The Irish Nursing Organisation yesterday voted unanimously not to attend the event and stressed any decisions taken by ICTU on Towards 2016 will not represent their views.

ICTU members are to hold a special conference at Jury’s Hotel, Ballsbridge, on Tuesday, where they are expected to ratify the social partnership deal.

Around 250 nurses attended a conference in Dublin yesterday to discuss the proposed new social partnership programme and debate the organisation’s continuing pay campaign which has been highlighted in the Labour Court.

Members unanimously voted to accept a special motion to carry out a national ballot of all INO members only when the continuing pay campaign is concluded.

“Today’s decision, taken after a detailed examination of all issues, reaffirms the priority that this organisation continues to give to nurses and midwives, specifically pay issues currently being considered by the Labour Court,” said INO general secretary Liam Doran. “This is a unique, and unprecedented, decision of the INO which demonstrates the commitment of the organisation to achieve progress on its pay issues.

“The next stage in the process is to wait for the Labour Court to issue its recommendation on the eight priority claims we presented to it in June.”

Their claim includes working 35 hours a week and the elimination of a pay anomaly with social care workers.
