Luas collision causes traffic mayhem

TRAFFIC chaos was caused in city centre Dublin yesterday afternoon after a crash on the Luas line at Queen Street.

The street in the north inner city was closed off after a tram, travelling from Tallaght to Connolly station, and a van collided. The accident happened after 3.30pm.

Gardaí directed traffic away from the scene and the street was closed off until the tram and van removed.

Gardaí said they had no reports of any serious injuries but a number of passengers were admitted to hospital, reportedly for shock and other minor injuries.

During the disruption, the service operated between Tallaght and Blackhorse.

Since the Red Line opened in 2004 there have been a number of accidents.

A man was hospitalised after a van and a tram accident at Capel Street on October 27 that year.

On the previous day, four people were taken to hospital after a crash between a tram and a car at Blackhall Place.

In March this year, three people were arrested after a car crashed on the Luas line at Davitt Road, Inchicore during a garda chase.
