THE Government has been criticised for failing to take appropriate action to stop potentially catastrophic floods, which could hit this country early next month.

Tides will be at their highest for nearly 20 years and while the British Government has warned thousands of people they face evacuation from low-lying areas, the Department of the Marine has claimed there’s “nothing to be alarmed about”.

Tony Lowes of Friends of the Irish Environment yesterday accused the Government of “burying its head in the sand” and ignoring potential disaster.
