New airport terminal to open to passengers
Airport managers confirmed yesterday that operations will, as expected, begin on a phased basis from Tuesday, August 1.
Passengers on the flight due to arrive from London at 7.35am next Tuesday will be the first to use the landmark new building.
Departing flights will continue to operate from the existing terminal until August 14.
At that point, operations at the old terminal, which opened in October 1961, will cease, and all operations will transferred to the new building by the next day.
A major information blitz is being planned and details will also be posted on the airport’s website www.corkairport.com.
Signs will be in place in and around the airport campus to direct people, while members of the airport police and customer service team will also be available to provide assistance.
“The management of Cork Airport would like to thank all its employees and customers for their support and assistance with the move to the new terminal,” a spokesperson for the Cork Airport Authority said.
“The transfer of operations on this scale at a busy airport required very detailed planning and professional and dedicated assistance.”
Cork Chamber of Commerce president Roger Flack welcomed the announcement.
“This is very good news for Cork and the southern region,” he said.
The new terminal has been designed to cater for five million passengers.
