GROUNDBREAKING clinical trials using adult stem cells to treat patients with advanced heart disease are expected to get underway in Ireland within the next two years.

The research, the first of its type in Ireland, is the result of a collaboration between National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway and University Hospital Galway.

Details of the trials were announced at the start of a two-day international conference on regenerative medicine at NUI Galway yesterday.
