YOUGHAL Town Council says it will not be changing its policy on the protected status of a privately-owned pond in Youghal where Cork infant Glen McNamara-Twomey drowned on Saturday.

Four years ago, the ponds special environmental designation prevented the owner of the Hilltop Seafield Caravan Park from filling it in according to the advice of health and safety experts.

Yesterday, the town council said its decisions are governed by the Youghal development plan which states that the pond is an area of natural importance.
