Showcase for companies seeking new employees

A UNIQUE showcase for some of the country’s largest companies who are seeking new employees will take place in Cork next week.

The event, which is being organised by FÁS, will bring together companies like Apple Computers, Dell, Starwood Hotels and James McMahon Construction.

They will exhibit at City Hall from Friday, June 16, to Sunday, June 18, and according to FÁS, it will present a great opportunity for a wide variety of people to get acquainted first-hand with potential employers.

“We would advise people to bring along their CVs with them and treat it like a job interview,” said FÁS assistant corporate affairs manager Caitriona White.

“If you’re a graduate, just finished your exams, or are looking to get back into the workforce, or change careers, it is an ideal opportunity for you.”

She said this was the first roadshow of its type in Ireland and was primarily geared at job-seekers in the Munster region.

“We came up with the idea and approached a number of companies. Some of the larger ones came on board straight away,” Ms White added.

Other companies which will be involved include Option Wireless and Shannon Aerospace. The latter is sure to be of interest to a celebrity who is due to open the exhibition next Friday.

Eileen Collins, whose family are from Cork and who was commander of a US space shuttle, will be in attendance.

“The three-day event aims to provide access for thousands of jobseekers to find the right future for them. For those considering taking up an apprenticeship, they can learn more about becoming an electrician or plasterer from the experts in the Skills Village,” Ms White said.

She added that people with ambitions to be a top TV presenter, or beautician to the stars, could also visit multi-media and beauty therapy exhibits for practical advice.

“Experts will also be on hand to provide information on living and working in Ireland as well as in other EU countries,” Ms White said.
