A FEMALE monkey was being cared for by primate experts last night after she was rescued from a circus where she was being kept in squalid conditions without food.

The monkey was discovered by a mechanic who was servicing a vehicle for a circus at Stradbally, Co Laois.

He opened the back door of the vehicle and saw a monkey in a filthy cage, without water and living in darkness.

He contacted gardaí who later telephoned the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty on Animals (ISPCA).

The monkey was taken to the south-east of the country where it was given medical attention and fed.

It’s believed it may haven’t been fed for a week.

ISPCA inspectors said last night that the animal was in a good condition, in spite of its lack of care.

Gardaí are trying to establish who was responsible for the neglect of the animal.
