City workers to strike from Monday

SIPTU has served strike notice on Waterford City Council for next Monday in a row over pay and allowances for over 130 manual, working staff.

Union Branch Organiser David Lane says that workers in other local authorities are earning up to 50% more than Waterford staff for performing the same duties.

“One of the biggest discrepancies is in the water section, which has the lowest weekly pay rates in the country. Pay for manual operatives in Waterford is €500 a week, compared with up to €750 elsewhere,” he said.
