A MAJOR genetic risk factor for prostate cancer in the general population has been identified for the first time.

Scientists who screened thousands of men with and without the disease homed in on a genetic fingerprint that seems highly associated with the disease.

The marker is a “microsatellite” — a portion of the genetic code containing a number of segments that repeat themselves.
