THE Government has granted the vast majority of foreign nationals with Irish-born children permission to stay, it has emerged.

Figures show that nine out of 10 applications for residency from foreign parents who gave birth here before January 1, 2005, have been approved.

That means 16,693 parents have been given residency status, out of a total of 17,917 applications. Some 1,119 applications were refused (7% of the total).
