€13.6m stolen from security vans since 2002

OVER €13.6 million has been taken in security van robberies since 2002 but only a small number of the criminal cases have been resolved, figures show.

Labour justice spokesman Brendan Howlin suggested the current cash-in-transit system seemed to operate like “a massive ATM for the criminal gangs”.

The Wexford TD said figures contained in a parliamentary question from Justice Minister Michael McDowell showed a total of €13.6m was stolen in cash-in-transit robberies since 2002. He said €6.3m was taken last year.
