Trade unions urge councillors to vote against rezoning of park

THE Waterford Council of Trade Unions is urging the 15 city councillors to vote against the planned rezoning of Wyse Park and New Street at their May meeting.

Trade unions urge councillors to vote against rezoning of park

The proposed rezoning to city centre commercial use is intended to pave the way for the construction of what the union describes as “a grossly disproportionate and inappropriate shopping centre” which it says “will decimate much of historical Waterford city centre”.

“Wyse Park is one of the few open public spaces remaining in the city centre and should be maintained as such,” the union said.

It added: “Many of the residents on New Street have lived there for many years and have no wish to move.

“Forcing these people to move in the interests of a private business would suggest that the city council are more interested in looking after property speculators than citizens of the city.”
