Abused greyhound on fast track to recovery

A GREYHOUND which had its ears savagely hacked off by brutes who wanted to hide her identity is making very steady progress.

The female greyhound, who was dumped in Tramore, Co Waterford, a month ago, is even playing with other dogs, Waterford Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (WSPCA) welfare officer Andrew Quinn, said.

All involved in the service are thankful to the many members of the public who flooded in with donations towards her care, a tally which has now reached €1,500.

“Aoife is very happy,” Mr Quinn said. “No decision has yet been taken as to what to do with her ears. We will decide later this week if she should have further surgery or not.

“She has muffled hearing at the moment. We’re not sure and we’re getting expert opinion on whether or not to put her through surgery which could be more traumatic for her. She’s already been through a lot.

“The infection in her ears has cleared up. We’re still awaiting the DNA test results from Bord na gCon which might lead us to identifying her owner or owners,” he said.

Aoife is believed to have been deliberately mutilated and dumped after she probably failed to live up to racing expectations.

The WSPCA is almost entirely dependent on the public to fund the 24-hour, seven-day-a-week service.
