11,000 motorists penalised last month

MORE than 11,000 motorists fell foul of the penalty points scheme last month, bringing the total number of drivers with points on their licences to more than 93,000 since the deterrent was introduced 14 months ago.

However, that figure is already on the rise as more than 5,000 other motorists have been notified that they have been caught on a penalty point offence and their licences will be marked in the near future.

Fear of a driving ban may be having an effect on the worst offenders as the number of drivers with 10 points on their licence two away from automatic disqualification remains static at four. No one has lost their licence so far.
