Diver dies after getting trapped in bid to salvage vessel

A 24-YEAR-OLD man lost his life on Saturday night following a diving accident in the sea off Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.

It is understood Damien Byrne, from Cabinteely, Dublin, died when he became trapped in a vessel he was attempting to salvage some time before 9pm in the evening.

He was part of a diving group that were using inflatable equipment to raise a boat which had gone down earlier. The alarm was raised and fellow divers brought Mr Byrne to the surface.

He taken ashore by the Dun Laoghaire lifeboat and given medical assistance before being transferred by ambulance to St Vincent’s hospital. However, he failed to recover and was later pronounced dead.

Gardaí are investigating the incident, but no foul play is suspected.

Meanwhile, a man in his 40s died after falling from a cliff in Cork city in the early hours of Sunday morning. An ambulance was called to the scene at a playground near Hackett’s Terrace where the body of a man was lying. It is reported he fell from an overhanging clifftop after attending a house party. Meantime, four people lost their lives on the roads over the weekend. A 44-year-old woman died in a two-vehicle crash at Ballycarney on the Enniscorthy to Bunclody road in County Wexford at 5.45pm yesterday. In County Laois, a woman died following a collision involving at least two vehicles at Keelogue, near Killeshin at around 4pm yesterday.

The 65-year-old woman, was a front-seat passenger in the fatal crash, which injured five other people.

They were taken to St Luke’s hospital in Kilkenny for treatment.

Gardaí in Donegal are investigating a road accident which claimed the lives of an elderly brother and sister on Saturday night.

A third person was critically injured in the crash.

The collision occurred at Ardchicken in Donegal town at 10.30pm on Saturday when a car was in collision with a jeep.

The driver and front-seat passenger were both killed in the crash. They were named as David George Quinn, 60, and Margaret Quinn, 59, from Ashgrove, Markethill, Co Armagh.

The female back-seat passenger was critically injured but the driver of the jeep escaped with minor injuries.
