THE Government should support parents with low literacy levels to help tackle the issue of children with similar problems, according to the National Adult Literacy Agency (NALA).

Research by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development in 1997 found that half a million Irish adults have low literacy levels.

NALA director Inez Bailey said parents with poor literacy skills were often unable to help their children learn to read at home.
