Cullen urges nuclear ship to stay out of Irish waters

ENVIRONMENT Minister Martin Cullen yesterday sought assurances from both France and the United States that a planned shipment of plutonium between both countries would not enter Irish waters.

The Government along with other coastal states, including New Zealand, Peru and Chile, also asked the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for detailed information on all movements of nuclear waste in international seas.

Mr Cullen said that the Irish Government co-sponsored this proposal to the IAEA because of the possible risk and public concern about international nuclear shipments.
