TOP gardaí want cars to be fitted with a device that will measure the amount of alcohol a driver has taken before beginning a journey.

The alcohol interlock is an electronic breath-testing gadget connected to the ignition of a vehicle and it prevents the car from starting if the driver fails the test.

Writing in the garda Management Journal, Chief Superintendent Denis Fitzpatrick said the interlock can help cut the numbers of intoxicated drivers on the road.
