ASTI backs Lennon deal

ASTI, the secondary school teachers’ union, has backed a €200,000 settlement with its general secretary, Charlie Lennon.

The union’s central executive committee yesterday voted overwhelmingly in favour of the settlement and Mr Lennon said later he was satisfied with the outcome.

There was just one item on the union’s agenda when members gathered behind closed doors in a Dublin hotel yesterday afternoon.

After heated debate, committee members voted by 128 votes to 10 in favour of the deal and Mr Lennon will step down from his position on December 12.

“At this stage both sides are happy with the deal and it is now a time for going forward rather than backward,” said ASTI president Pat Cahill.
