LAW-ABIDING drivers will have to fork out extra to pay for compensation awards to victims of some 1,000 hit-and-run incidents being dealt with by insurers.

The Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland (MIBI), the body which covers claims against uninsured drivers, has approximately 3,000 cases on its books.

One-third of these involve 'untraced' drivers those who hit someone and fled the accident scene.
