Gang of youths are targeting homosexuals
Joe Costello, Labour’s spokesman on justice, said the man aged in his 30s may have suffered brain damage.
A friend of the family, Mr Costello said it was the second time the victim was attacked because he is gay. The previous assault happened just a week before, the TD said.
“The incident raises the ugly spectre of gay-bashing on our streets which unfortunately would appear to be on the rise,” he added. There have been a number of assaults on gay men in Dublin city centre in recent months.
Mr Costello said the young man was assaulted after leaving the George Public House on Friday night.
He said it was important there is an increased garda presence on Dublin’s streets, with the focus of attention where members of the gay community might gather.
Meanwhile, a man is in a critical condition after being the victim of a suspected hit and run.
Gardaí from Mullingar are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the 24-year-old local man.
He was found at Streamstown, Mullingar, Co Westmeath, at 2.30am yesterday.
Gardaí appeal for anyone who was in the Streamstown area of Mullingar between 1am and 2.30am to contact them at Mullingar Garda Station 044 84000.
