75% of car-death children did not wear seat belts

Yesterday, the National Safety Council directed a stern road safety message at parents and guardians this May Bank Holiday by calling on them to ensure children travelling in vehicles are using an appropriate child restraint.

The call comes in the wake of recent research into car crash fatalities of children under 15 years in the five-year period 1996 to 2000. The investigation showed over three quarters (77%) of child fatalities were found not to have been wearing a child restraint or seatbelt.
