UP to 30 armed detectives have been drafted in to Limerick from Cork and Dublin to provide back-up to gardaí, amid fears that a city gang is planning new attacks.

One senior source said: “This operation is a reaction by us to what we have been seeing on the ground in recent days.”

Armed detectives have carried out a series of house raids in recent days in the Ballinacurra Weston area of Limerick, where one violent gang is based.
