Crash on ‘notorious stretch’
A local resident said he had stopped counting the number of fatal accidents. Carsten Boettger moved to the South Tipperary area 20 years ago where he runs a mixed farm and the Kilcoran Farm Hostel.
“Up to a few years ago, I have counted 26 deaths on the stretch of road between Cahir and Skeheenrinky,” said German-born Mr Boettger.
“I was at the scene and, apart from the personal tragedy of so many lives lost, I was moved by the shell-shocked looks on the faces of the fire brigade personnel.
“It must have been sheer hell for them to have to cut those people out of the wreckage and I don’t think firemen get the recognition they deserve,” he said.
A local radio journalist on her way to work came across the accident.
Tipp FM’s Aisling Hyland said it was the worst tragedy on that stretch of road in living memory.
