Teaching union bids for building work cash

SCHOOL principals should be paid for overseeing repairs and building work during holidays, the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) said yesterday.

Every summer, hundreds of projects are undertaken at some of the country’s 4,000 schools, ranging from minor repairs on windows and furniture to roofing and plumbing jobs.

Under the €30 million Summer Works Scheme, almost 450 schools have been given budgets for urgent structural improvements, health and safety work and to improve access for students with disabilities.
