A COMMUNITY activist has criticised a contemporary production of Romeo and Juliet, which mirrors the bloody Limerick feud, as “an insult to the city”.

Sean O’Neill from Prospect in Limerick city said he was “appalled” that Limerick Youth Theatre would focus on the violence of the feud to present entertainment. He made his comments after it emerged that the play would feature an array of weapons during the street fighting scenes.

The organisers of the play, which opens at the Belltable Arts Centre in Limerick next week, said they wanted to provoke debate in their modern-take on the classic love story.
