TWO State prisons in Cork and Kildare will close their doors tomorrow after last-minute talks to resolve the impasse over prison officer’s overtime pay broke down in failure last night.

Spike Island in Cork and the Curragh Prison in Kildare will be mothballed from tomorrow as part of a series of contingency measures approved by the Government last month.

Negotiations to ward off the closures convened by a facilitator at the Labour Reconciliation Commission (LRC) continued all day yesterday.
