Height restriction expected to be set at 4.6 metres

THE Government will ban so-called super-trucks from all Irish roads once the Dublin Port Tunnel is opened later this year, the Minister for Transport confirmed last night.

Height restriction expected to be set at 4.6 metres

Martin Cullen said he intended to introduce height restrictions, thought to be around 4.6 metres, for trucks driving on Irish roads. He was speaking on RTÉ One’s Prime Time programme last night as part of a report on Irish transportation.

The issue has been controversial since it emerged that the height of the €700 million port tunnel would be insufficient to accommodate super-trucks, which are often over five metres in height. They have become more common in Europe in recent years.
