A WOMAN in her 30s died yesterday after her car crashed into an entrance pillar to Michael Flatley’s Castlehyde estate in Cork.

Moyra Burke, from Castlehyde was pronounced dead at the scene just outside Fermoy.

In a separate incident, an 89 year old pensioner was killed yesterday when struck by a car near Mallow golf club. The deaths bring to 79 the number of people killed on Irish roads so far this year.

Gardaí were last night still investigating the cause of the Castlehyde accident and appealed for witnesses to come forward. The accident happened on the N73 Fermoy to Mallow road at around 8:45am yesterday.

Ms Burke, who was the sole occupant of the car, was travelling from Fermoy towards Mallow when it appears she lost control of the vehicle.

The driver’s side of the car collided with the corner of a massive entrance pillar to millionaire dancer Flatley’s Castlehyde estate.

Emergency services rushed to the scene but the woman was pronounced dead a short time later.

Her body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem.

Supt Flor Horan said garda technical experts examined the scene and that their investigations were continuing.

He said the stretch of road is relatively straight and driving conditions were good at the time.

He appealed for witnesses to contact Fermoy Garda station on 025-82100.

Flatley is in America at the moment ahead of his European tour which starts in Wembley next month.
