Sinnott calls for EPA to disband
Emissions were almost seven times the permitted level when tested on a particular day, according to an EPA audit, in 2003.
But the report revealed the company did not notify the EPA of this breach, despite being required to do so under the terms of its licence. The plant’s own record gave a reading at a fraction of permitted levels.
Ms Sinnott said she could not understand how EPA auditors could conclude in their report that the company’s environmental management system was “mature, well developed and generally operated well.”
The EPA also acknowledged environmental improvements at the plant and was “confident” they would progress in the future.
But, Ms Sinnott said that, given what’s contained in the report, it was truly amazing the auditors could reach such a conclusion.
“The report bears out exactly what I’ve been saying all along. The EPA is not protecting the people and the environment of this country. The EPA is not standing up to the companies that are causing pollution and should be disbanded. (It) should also be investigated,” she said.
