Councillor praises Rosscarbery’s community spirit

The historic cathedral town is one of Cork county’s representatives in the North-South Pride of Place competition, now in its third year.

Councillor Jim Daly of Fine Gael said yesterday: “It’s no coincidence that Rosscarbery carries the county hopes onto a national stage. The efforts, over many years, of community and voluntary groups in the town, is there to see.

“They have been to the fore in community and social development projects along with housing schemes and many other worthwhile tasks.

“Having witnessed the presentation made to the competition’s judges, I can only say that I’m delighted to see voluntary activities being rewarded.”

The results of the competition will be announced in Belfast in October 2005. “There’s no denying Rosscarbery’s chances of being awarded another All Ireland victory before the year is out,” Mr Daly said.

John Moloney, who heads the Rosscarbery Tidy Towns committee said that the community effort and awareness, in the run-up to the weekend judging, was exceptional.

He said the competition, which has the backing of Co-operation Ireland, was geared towards encouraging communities to work for the betterment of their local area.

“Taking into consideration the size of Cork county, we are honoured to be representing the region in one of the categories,” he said.

Among the projects highlighted in the presentation to the judges was an additional new social housing scheme, providing 12 units for the elderly and returning emigrants, along with the e restoration project at St Fachtna’s Cathedral.

“In terms of national tidy towns’ success, Rosscarbery has a long way to go but we are advancing steadily every year,” Mr Moloney said. “The committee was hugely impressed by the wonderful support we got in recent weeks. The town was looking splendid with residences painted, flowers displays and streets gleaming. Everybody came on board.”
