New bridge across the Lee brings the light fantastic to Cork
As motorists cursed weekend traffic diversions in Cork city, engineers were busily swinging the newest river crossing into place.
With the Coal Quay closed from its junction with Lavitt’s Quay and Kyrl’s Quay from midnight Thursday, a 1,000 tonne crane was used to install the footbridge linking the Coal Quay with Pope’s Quay.
Four years beyond its desired Millennium deadline, postponed due to a lack of funding, the bridge was put in place at the weekend.
Designed by Dublin-based Muir, the firm responsible for the Liffey’s boardwalk, the new footbridge has a light steel structure, two symmetrical arches and a timber deck, for which the wood was sourced in South America. A lighting scheme will enhance its evening look.
Ascon, the company involved in the construction work, says that further work remains to be done. To facilitate this, the Coal Quay diversion will remain in place until 6pm next Wednesday.
However, opening and naming the city’s newest bridge must wait until September when it will share the honours with the official opening of the new-look St Patrick Street.
