Young woman accidentally shot by brother
Sarah Blakely, aged 25, from Ballyheenan, Kilnaleck, Co Cavan, died within a few minutes of being hit by a single discharge from a shotgun in her family home.
It is understood the victim's 20-year-old brother had picked up the firearm without realising it was loaded.
The incident occurred shortly before 2pm on Sunday as the Blakely family had finished eating their Christmas dinner.
A garda spokesperson confirmed that Ms Blakely had been fatally injured after a legally held firearm was discharged.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her body was later removed to Cavan General Hospital where the results of a post mortem were due to be released last night.
Sarah's father, Elliot Blakely, is a well-known, part-time farmer in this rural part of Co Cavan between Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan, and Granard, Co Longford a short distance from Lough Sheelin.
It is understood the weapon was a Christmas present to Sarah's brother.
The dead woman, who was single, worked as a clerk in Ulster Bank. She is survived by her parents and two brothers.
The local Church of Ireland clergyman and family friend, Canon James Sides, described Sarah as "a happy, intelligent and sensible young woman".
"The Blakelys are a very good family and are deeply upset and traumatised," said Canon Sides.
A neighbour said the whole community was devastated. "I don't know how the family will be able to face another Christmas," said the neighbour.
The scene at the Blakely home was preserved for a forensic examination.
Garda sources said it was highly unlikely there would be any prosecution as it seemed a tragic accident.
Sarah's funeral is expected to take place tomorrow.
