Seven special needs youths hospitalised after crash

A minibus carrying a group of 14 youths with special needs, collided with a car at Waterford industrial estate, outside the city at 4.15pm.

Six people on the bus were injured in the smash and the female driver of the car was transferred by ambulance to Cork University Hospital last night.

A CUH spokesperson confirmed the driver was being treated in the hospital but her condition was not known.

The bus and the car collided at a junction close to the Brothers of Charity Facility where the youths had spent the day.

The 14 people with physical and intellectual disabilities were being brought home to various locations around the city, after spending time at a supervised workshop on the industrial estate.

Several ambulances and units of the Waterford City fire service were called to the scene of the accident.

All the injured teenagers were treated in the Accident and Emergency unit of the hospital and none were

admitted to a ward.

A hospital spokesperson last night described their injuries as minor and not serious. Gardaí in Waterford said that those injured in the crash were very traumatised.

“We’re continuing our investigations into the crash and those injured were very confused and upset after what

has happened,” a garda spokesperson said.

The gardaí appealed for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.
